Every day we walk along streets without devoting ourselves to the beautiful pattern of manhole covers. I took it upon myself to pay attention to these iron covers, and I went on an undercover mission through Basel. If you look out for manhole covers, you will find many of them around you. Sometimes they differ only in small characteristics, such as size or text. All 45 covers come from the nine post-code areas of the city of Basel. From each district, five manhole covers were selected, all of which are located in well-known places. The numbers, which are behind the post-code, indicate the geographical longitude and latitude of the location of the illustrated cover. These two decimal numbers can be pasted in Google Maps, and hence the location of the manhole cover can be detected.
